In the next installation of our MINI MOMENTS series, where the world’s biggest stars give us an exclusive, behind-the-scenes glimpse at their career milestones, MINI V caught up with none other than Joshua Bassett. The 22-year-old actor and budding musician, who is currently starring as Ricky on High School Musical: The Musical: The Series on Disney+ and belting out his favorite tunes on “The Complicated Tour” in support of his recent musical releases, took a second backstage to reflect on his current state and get excited for what lies ahead.

MINI V: How are you feeling as you begin to kick off the tour from San Francisco to London? Are you looking forward to exploring the regions more, playing a little bit of tourist here and there?
Joshua Bassett: I couldn’t be more excited to go on the road! This band is next-level magic, and we’ll be doing some new songs. Also, I’m always up for playing tourist when we have free time!

MV: What is your favorite part of performing for your fan base globally?
JB: It’s the gift of a lifetime to per- form songs that I wrote in my bedroom all over the world. Everyone has a different favorite, and I always love hearing about people’s unique cultural backgrounds and lifestyles.
MV: From first releasing your debut single in 2020, to releasing two EPs in 2021 and two in 2022, and now with the tour, what would you say is the biggest change you’ve noticed about yourself and your sound?

JB: I think the muscle I’ve been strengthening the most has been storytelling. It’s one thing to write honest lyrics, and it’s another thing when the whole song has a true throughline and consistent narrative.
MV: What are your three favorite songs to perform? And can we expect to see any covers of some of your personal favorite songs from other artists on tour?
JB: Nothing beats “Feel Something,” “Secret,” and “Set Me Free.” Singing those with the crowd is always a treasure. I’m actually doing a new cover every night!
MV: Have there been any pre-tour rehearsal hijinks happening?
JB: Any time we have a spare moment, someone in the band will start a jam and we’ll spontaneously write a song. It’s a very creative and loving environment. I just know that the crowd will feel that energy.
MV: Having done your first tour last year, what are you looking to do differently this time around?
JB: We finally have a tour bus! I love road trips, so being able to do the biggest [tour] of my life for “work”—is beyond a dream come true.
MV: We heard that High School Musical: The Musical: The Series season four will be out later this year—what can viewers expect to see in the upcoming season? Are there any more original songs that you’re making for the show?
JB: The season is insanity! We take the meta-ness to a whole new level. I can’t spoil anything, but it’s a special one. I think I cried more this season than any of the previous ones combined.
